Is Compliment from Girl in Canada Goose Jacket Actually Insult?

While awaiting a saliva test at the Kohl Center last Thursday, sophomore Ashley Thomas had an unsettling experience when someone complimented her purse. She wasn’t so much perturbed by the comment itself, but rather who gave it.
“It was this girl wearing a Canada Goose jacket,” Ashley told us. “I couldn’t help but feel like there was something passive-aggressive about it. Like, why would she compliment something I thrifted when she has a coat that costs a grand?”
But why do so many people spend money on a coat whose brand name evokes a bird only slightly more graceful than a November turkey?
“I can’t think of anything better to spend the money on than on a winter essential,” stated Lindsay Butler, another Canada-goose-sporter. “Tuition? Ha! No! I mean something my parents wouldn’t pay for. Maybe 6 Fjällräven backpacks in assorted colors?”
Wesley Turner, a student whose coat contains more pockets than dollars spent on it, seconded Ms. Thomas’ initial suspicion.
“I mean, a woman wearing a jacket that expensive simply doesn’t have the capacity to give a genuine compliment. She probably skinned the coyote herself.
“To pay for one of those, you’d have to work 140 hours minimum wage. Do you realize how much that is? That’s six straight days.” Wesley ended his interview by trying to force a copy of The Communist Manifesto into our hands.
