MADISON, WI - Mark your calendars, students! University Housing Dining and Culinary Services has announced that Four Lakes Market will be hosting a “British Night” special event dinner on Monday, October 13th. The night will be headlined with delicacies like bread sandwiches and bean soup, with the full menu to be revealed later.

University Housing cited a desire to bring more international cuisine into the dining hall menus as the motivation for “British Night”. University Housing’s Head of Special Dining Events, Williamson Edward Arthurbert, told the Misnomer, “With the bitter cold of Wisconsin winter approaching and midterms looming, we figured it would be a great idea to spice things up in the dining halls. And what better way to beat the cold than the vibrant, delicious flavors of Great Britain?” In addition to the special menu, every drink at Four Lakes Market will be replaced with Earl Grey Tea, and salt, pepper, and all other seasonings will be unavailable for the duration of dinner.

The response across campus to the announcement was mixed; the Misnomer surveyed 100 random students, asking them how excited they were for the event on a scale of 1 to 10. The survey produced an average score of 4.3, with a margin of error of 10. Furthermore, 97% of students report not knowing what the dining halls are serving until they are in line.

Some groups celebrated the news of British cuisine on campus. The British Student Association (BSA) put out a statement calling the dinner, “A wonderful recognition of British culture and a chance for every student to discover the wonderful delicacies of British food”. The Students with Weak Stomachs (SWS) also praised the event for “providing an inclusive environment for picky eaters, students with weak palettes, and those with the inability to handle seasoning and spices.” The response from other groups was not as positive, however. The campus branch of the IRA announced plans to protest and boycott Four Lakes Market indefinitely, and had recently been spotted staging a “Madison Tea Party” by pouring Twisted Teas into Lake Mendota.

While the food might not be flavorful to most students, it at least will not be dangerous. The Housing Resident Appreciation Lobster Dinner last May left 60 students hospitalized with various illnesses after a mysterious green sludge was reported coming from the lobsters.
